Things may work before XP loads because the PC is using built-in support for those devices. Once XP loads (the wrong drivers?) things may stop working. Can you boot in Safe Mode (F8 before XP starts to load)? If you can, and have things work, try installing the software drivers there.

Then reboot normally. If that doesn't do it, disconnect all USB devices, except mouse and keyboard and reboot in Safe Mode again. Open Device Manager and expand list under USB.
