I got one of the MIDI to USB cables, and my PC recognises it, but I haven't gotten much further than that. What kind of software will I need, to use the keyboard with my PC? We have sibelius, but I couldn't get it to work with it.
It sees the USB thing, but doesn't seem to respond to it in any way other that that's its there. I have read the Yamaha manual, but it doesn't go into any detail. In fact half the things in the manual haven't even worked when I tried it.
Its a terrible manual. Any help or anything? Response to 2009-01-05 06:41:30 Hey whats happening 066pop, sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet Iv been really busy lately. I can't help you much with FL specifically, because I don't use it. Having said that, you will usually have two tasks in getting MIDI keyboard to work with a program. First, you have to make sure the program is receiving the MIDI input, often there is an icon that lights up whenever the program is receiving MIDI data.

Second, you have to choose which track will receive the midi data. Sometimes that involves manually making sure that the Keyboard and the track are operating on the same MIDI channel. I suspect the second problem is the reason you are having trouble getting your keyboard to do anything in Sibelius. Of course there's always the ghetto method of playing the phrase on your keyboard and then manually inputing the phrase into your sequencer, but thats certainly not ideal because, of course, you cant hear how it will really sound until you sequence it. Oh, one more thing thats important. If you haven't done so already make sure that at the back of your keyboard the in cable is going to the out port and the out cable is going to the in port.
You probably knew that already, but I know I have had that problem a few times myself, haha. Response to 2009-01-06 16:41:08 YAY! Problem solved.
PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS BETTER IF YOU HAVE TIME! I JUST SAID IT QUICKLY, BUT MOST POEPLE WILL PRBABLY MNOT UNDERSTAND IT. THIS IS JUST WHAT WORKED FOR ME. Ok, if you just searched a search engine for Yamaha Keyboards around the PSr-280ish number, then heres how to solve all your problems when there was no problem! Lol.Breif description: 1. Ok I found a tutorial and it talked about setting up FL 7 but not 8, but it is basicly the same with 8. In the options thing, enable all three of the midi things.
Then go into the midi settings box and use the microsoft midi map thing, and also make sure that your keyboard shows up in the input part, or like mine is the USB connection thing. It should just show up.
Then check your keyboard. Although you think that the in goes into the in and same with the out, but it does not. Just swap them round if you are having problems. 3.Now turn on your keyboard after connecting it and press some keys at random. You should hear some sounds! You should notice that you will hear sounds from whatever things you have on the 'step sequencer' or whatever its called.
IF someone has time just explain this better please.
