Girls Soccer - 2018 Gunston District Champions (courtesy photo) The T. Williams High School girls’ soccer team marched through the regular season with only one blemish, finishing as the top seed entering the playoffs with a win-loss record of 13-1 and an impressive tally of 81-10 in total goals. In the Gunston District tournament, the Titans dispensed with Annandale 9-1 in the semifinals and topped Hayfield 5-1 in the final to win the 2018 Gunston District Championship on May 16. Their record improved to 15-1 with an 11-game winning streak.
1 seed entering the Occoquan Region C tournament, T. Williams faced No. 3 West Potomac at home in the regional quarterfinals on May 23. The Titans scored first, 12 minutes into the game, but the Wolverines countered 10 minutes later and then scored again on a free kick that lofted over the goalkeepers’ head with 14 minutes left in the first half. The Titans scored the equalizer in the 36th minute to enter halftime in a 2-2 draw.
Williams scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and retained their lead for a 3-2 victory. Scoring for the Titans were seniors Bella Ponzi and Claire Constant, and freshman Erika Harwood. Woodson at home in the semifinal match of the Occoquan Region C tournament on May 30. The Titans’ chance on goal by Erika Harwood around the 15 minute mark was kicked away by Woodson goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz. Still scoreless after nearly 23 minutes, the Cavaliers managed to get past the T.C. Goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead. The Woodson keeper blocked another close shot attempt by Claire Constant at around 33 minutes of elapsed time to retain a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Titans missed twice over the crossbar early in the second half and strong Cavalier defense continued to foil their attempts on goal. Woodson scored on a lofting chip shot off a direct kick with under 10 minutes in regulation time, taking a 2-0 lead, which they held to the end. The Woodson Cavaliers went on to win the regional championship and advanced in the state tournament until the semifinals. The Titans’ season came to a close in the regional semifinals, ending their 12-game winning streak.
Their final win-loss record was 16-2 with a tally of 98-16 in total goals for the season. Players and their head coach earned top honors for the 2018 season.
